JL's Story
J L first came to DoubleCreek
with his therapeutic counselor for a day
visit. With complex medical problems such as
autism and other concerns, JL requires one
on one supervision. Between a wagon ride
and his first time on a horse, JL
flourished. Because of these complex
medical and mental health concerns, the
foster family had little to no resource to
rely on for respite outside of their
family. That is, until DoubleCreek.
Since
his first visit JL has spent several
overnight weekend visits to DoubleCreek and
can get up on a horse faster than
some cowboys we know! In the recreation room
he enjoys music and designing maps on the
computer. He can draw an interstate map from
memory! He knows all of the animals here at
DoubleCreek and they provide him with
comfort and security at each visit.
Not only
does DoubleCreek provide his now adoptive
parents with some respite rest and relief,
but it provides him with an opportunity to
build his self confidence.
The BC Kids
Finding respite for a sibling
group of 6 children is not an easy task for
a case manager or a foster parent. That is,
until DoubleCreek! This group of children
range in age from 3-12 years and are one fun
loving band of brothers and sisters. With
individual interests, group activities
ensure everyone gets to have some fun. From
swimming in the pool to Kareoke and costume
time. How do you get 6 children and 2 adults
to a night out for pizza? In 2 cars of
course!
The Story of EG
EG’s time in the foster care
system came at a young age and was a typical
story of a boy being moved from one foster
home to another. His most recent placement
was a group home as it is a challenge to
find foster homes for teenage boys. With a
motivation to succeed he was able to obtain
privileges that most boys in a group home
setting would not. EG was taken into the
mentoring program for teens at DoubleCreek.
In addition to being taught work ethic, how
to sign a time in/out sheet, he was paid an
hourly salary for jobs completed. He was
also the first youth to be supported through
the hunter safety program, which he
successfully completed!
